The old Valley National Bank building stood at Apache Boulevard
and Rural Road on Arizona State University's Tempe campus. Saving the aluminum geodesic dome roof was the compromise
that ended the long battle to preserve one of the Valley's
first and most unique drive-through bank. ASU said they had no choice but to tear down the
building they owned and most recently used as an information center as they needed room for what is now the Barrett Honors College's new dormitories.
The domed roof was to be saved, put in storage and reinstalled
on campus. ASU's College of Design was interested in challenging its students to create proposals for
reusing the dome. Therefore ACR Contracting, Inc. needed to remove the intact dome before demolishing the remaining building.
